I'm a millennial queer quilter based in Kent, WA. I have been quilting for five years, and what began as a hobby has grown into a passion that I'm channeling into a business and way of life. When I'm not standing at a longarm, I'm standing at the surgical bedside; my day job as a surgical technologist has seen me through more than ten years of early mornings and late nights on call. I have a wonderfully supportive partner who works in the gaming industry and five cats.
Pretty Kitty Quilts was established in September of 2023, and its doors officially open April of 2024. My quilting studio is located in a business plaza in Kent, WA. The machine I use is an Innova M24 with Autopilot, and with my 12 foot frame, I can accommodate nearly any quilt size! My first experience with longarm quilting was hand-guided free motion, and that remains one of my favorite ways to add a personal touch to quilts, but robotics are their own brand of fun and I love finding creative ways to make a quilt pop.
I have a saying hanging in my studio that reads, "I work hard so my cats can have a better life." It's true! I love my five cats like my babies, and Tiabini, the original Pretty Kitty, serves as my mascot and muse. Don't worry: no cats are allowed in my studio, which is an entire zip code away from where me and my cats live.
A community can only grow when we embrace all newcomers, no matter who they are, who they love, how they call themselves, or what skill level they have. Too often I hear people (especially younger people) express that they are intimidated by how traditional quilting communities appear to be, and shy away from sharing their hobby with others. I hope to offer a friendly and welcoming face to those who are maybe a bit scared to send their quilt off to a "professional" who they fear may judge them for everything from their fabric choices to their lifestyle, as well as be a fresh addition to the established quilting community without whom this hobby wouldn't exist.
